US sprint wins for Baptiste, Cain

Machel Cedenio completed a hat-trick of men's 400 metres victories at the Cayman Invitational track and field meet, in George Town, late on Saturday.

The Trinidad and Tobago quartermiler clocked 45.10 seconds to secure the top spot, ahead of Jamaica's Demish Gaye, the runner-up in 45.30, and France's Mame-Ibra Anne (45.98). Cedenio, winner of the one-lap title in 2014 and 2015, produced a strong run in the second half of the race to dismiss Gaye's challenge.

Cedenio has started his 2016 campaign in impressive fashion. On April 22, the 20-year-old athlete won his opener in Florida, USA, in 44.79 seconds. He followed up with silver at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Doha, Qatar in 44.68, before returning to winners' row in George Town. Cedenio is currently fifth on this season's world outdoor performance list with his 44.68 run.

Kyle Greaux finished third in the Cayman Invitational men's 200m event, the T&T athlete getting to the line in 20.94 seconds. Antigua and Barbuda sprinter Miguel Francis topped the field in 20.16, while second spot went to Anguillan-born Great Britain athlete Zharnel Hughes (20.70).

T&T's Semoy Hackett secured sixth spot in the women's 100m dash with an 11.45 seconds clocking. Jenna Prandini of the United States won in 11.16, from Jamaica's Kerron Stewart (11.20) and American Carmelita Jeter (11.34).

Sprint legend Usain Bolt topped the men's 100m in 10.05 seconds. American Dentarius Locke picked up silver in 10.12, while bronze went to Bolt's fellow-Jamaican Kemar Bailey-Cole (10.18). Greaux was eighth in 10.71.

In Florida, USA, Kelly-Ann Baptiste struck gold in the Sprint Elite Meet women's 100m event in 11.14 seconds. The T&T track star had clocked a wind-assisted 11.13 in the qualifying round.

Baptiste claimed silver in the 200m in 22.73 seconds. Another T&T sprinter, Kai Selvon won another women's half-lap race in 23.22, while Alena Brooks topped a women's 400m race in 54.44.

At the Desert Challenge meet for para athletes, in Arizona, T&T's Nyoshia Cain captured the women's T44 sprint double. Cain won Friday's 200m event in a personal best 27.69 seconds, and followed up with victory in Saturday's 100m dash in 13.15, also a new PB (personal best).

At the Sam Houston Last Chance meet, in Texas, Deborah John got to the line in 13.63 seconds for second spot in the women's 100m hurdles. She also competed in the 100m dash, finishing seventh in 12.09.

In Guadeloupe, Deon Lendore finished fourth in the Meeting Elite de la Grande Caraibe men's 400m event in 45.31 seconds. Another T&T quartermiler, Lalonde Gordon was seventh in 46.65. Grenadian athletes, Kirani James and Bralon Taplin finished one-two, clocking 44.15 and 44.54, respectively. Jamaica's Javon Francis (44.77) secured third spot.

T&T's Mikel Thomas was fourth in the men's 110m hurdles in 13.61 seconds. Janeil Bellille clocked 57.77 to finish sixth in the women's 400m hurdles. And Richard "Torpedo" Thompson got to the line in 10.37 for seventh spot in the men's 100m. Jamaican Asafa Powell won in 10.04, from American Diondre Batson (10.15) and Canadian Andre De Grasse (10.20).
